Ischia, the Green island

The most beautiful and biggest island in the Gulf of Naples, Ischia is one of the most famous seaside and touristic spa centres of Italy and the world.
Casamicciola und der Steilhang des Epomeo
The ancients called it Pitecusae.
Today, the island of Ischia is a well-known tourist centre for four main reasons. Firstly, for its unequalled natural beauty, secondly, for its all-year-round mild climate, thirdly for its thermal water, and lastly for its modern tourist facilities and hotels.

However, the greenery does not hide the natural beauty of the lay of the land. Ischia has a very varied landscape, including mountains, isolated hills, majestic promontories, slopes, plains, and brows of hills, all of which can easily be seen from the magnificent terrace of the Soccorso in Forio from which the incredible beauty of Mount Epomeo can be enjoyed.

The chalk white of the island houses which gives the scene the magic touch of man's presence can be glimpsed among the limpid green of the vineyards, the bluish green of the olive groves and the dark green of the orange and lemon groves.

Notice the clear blue sea which still today surrounds the beautiful island of Ischia with its clean waters! Empedocles' four elements - water, fire, air and earth - can be found on the island of Ischia. Ischia is an incredibly beautiful island lying under a blue sky in the middle of a still unspoilt sea, held up by the fires of its dormant volcano (Epomeo), which makes its presence felt via the many 'geysers' and the mineral springs found all over the island.

However, the natural beauty of Ischia does not finish there. Everything from the sea to the mountain - including its harbours, the small bays, its convenient beaches and ports, the high rockface along its coast, the vegetation, the variety of the plant life, the pine trees and the myriads of multi-coloured flowers - make Ischia one of the most beautiful islands of one of the most beautiful countries in the world.

Ischia's beaches are famous: long stretches of sand between blue sea and the green hills of the interior. They are also very popular, and in high summer some become crowded masses of sunburnt humanity where strangers lie on paid-for sunbeds two feet from each other. For a bit more privacy, visit in early or late summer, or consider taking a water-taxi (or walking) to more inaccessible coves.

As elsewhere in Italy, beaches are generally divided up into stabilimenti, private businesses who charge an admission price for use of their patch of beach. Some facilities may be included in the basic entrance fee; others will cost extra. Services available generally include deckchairs, sun loungers, towels and changing rooms.

There is often a bar or restaurant, meaning you can pass your whole day on the beach, should you wish. However, there are also stretches of  free beach, which is a more familiar set-up for overseas visitors. Here you can bring your own towels, buckets and spades etc. and make yourself comfortable at no charge. Especially in peak season, though, you may need to walk some way to find a stretch of spiaggia libera.

You can go from Villa at The most rinomate beaches of Ischia Island at  foot or by continuous service Bus and microbus:

Chiaia Beaches, Chiaia Beach, Foriothe perfect place for children, distant 350 meters

Citara  Beach, Citara Beach, Forio d'Ischiawhere is Poseidon Thermal Garden, approximately 1 km. This beach is at the foot of Epomeo, and is one of the most popular on the island. the crystal-clear water that laps the beach mixes with the thermal water spas in several points, allowing you to bathe in the sea and reap the benefit of thermal water at the same time

Bay of San Montano, San Montano Beach, Bay of Negombo, Forioa splendid bay where is the wonderful thermal park of the Negombo. This unusual beach, closed in between Mount Vico and Mount Zaro, has unique characteristics compared to the island’s other beaches. The clear sea water is very hot and the water is extremely shallow

Cartaromana beach – IschiaCartaromana Beach, The Rocks This beach is between the Castello Aragonese and the Sant’Anna cliffs. The beautiful beach also offers one of the best views of the island. Cartaromana is well-known for its natural hot thermal water springs that spill out on the shore, allowing tourists to swim in the sea in winter too.

Sorgeto

Sorgeto is a shingle small bay, lying to the foot of cliffs covered by agave plants, to the West of Sant’Angelo. Thermal water gushes into the sea. On the hill behind, is located an important archaeological site, known as Punta Chiarito which was where the first Greek colonist settled vines an a hut village.

Marina dei Maronti – Barano Maronti BeachThe beach at Maronti is 3 km long and can be reached by taking a charming panoramic road that starts in Barano and descends towards the sea. Another great way to reach the beach is to use a water taxi from the picturesque port of Sant’Angelo. The beach at Maronti is the largest on the island; it is full of thermal springs, natural spas and fumaroles.

Fumarole Beach - Sant'Angelo This beach is supposed to be the island's finest. It's long, wide, clean and not too crowded; it's also of a dark colour, since it's of volcanic origin. It can be reached by footpath in 30 minutes from Sant'Angelo, or in a couple of minutes by boat-taxi.
The beach is also a populat hangout at night: there are some fumaroles there, and locals often go there and cook dinner in the sand. I had a friend who used to live there, so one night she took me there: we packed drinks, some eggs, a chicken and aluminum foil... and off we went. We wrapped everything in the aluminum foil and with a spade dug a small hole by the fumaroles, and then covered overything in sand... and off we went swimming. About an hour later we took everything off the sand, unwrapped the food, and had an unforgettable dinner

The climate

Ischia's climate has the dry heat typical of the Mediterranean.
The orographical conformation of the island means that some areas get more rain than others; there is more rainfall in the north east.
The cloud and vapour carrier winds are Mediterranean ones, namely the scirocco (south-easterly) and libeccio (south-westerly), which are common in the spring.
Other frequent weather phenomena are the spring and occasional frosts and the mistral breezes in the summer months.

Excursions

From the Forio’s Port (100 mt near ) hydrofoils for Naples and excursions  every day for Capri, Ponza, Ventotene and Procida Islands, Naples, Sorrento and Positano, Amalfi, Pompeii, Vesuvius, Royal Palace and Park of Caserta

Local Excursions

Exploring the island, taking in secluded bays, ancient rock dwellings, archaeological sites (particularly around Lacco Ameno) and traditional inland villages; hiking up Mt Epomeo, the highest point on the island, from the village of Fontana.

Sant’Angelo

Restaurant on the sea, Sant'Angelo IschiaTo-day the old fishermen village Sant’Angelo is an international touristic resort. No cars are allowed to drive in Sant’Angelo and unlike the other Ischia’s villages it’s still a peaceful oasis. Full of trees and plants of any kind in Sant’Angelo you can have marvellous panorama with the all coloured houses joined to the small hill on the harbour. Small roads which overlook at the blue and clear sea.

Boutiques with exclusive griffes, fine jeweller’s shops, ateliers, craftmanlike goods, expecially the local pottery, allow the visitors a special shopping.

The place offers a lot of excursions, into the island and on the other ones.
One of the most interesting is one that takes to Cavascura’s valley where a powerfull thermal spring that spout out at 100 grades, feeds an thermal baths hollows in the stone.
Also, there is an excursion to the Epomeo, that tourists prefeer to takes by night to can admire the wonderful sights of the daybreak.

Reviews From Tripadvisor.

Simply put, if there is a more beautiful place on earth, I don’t know where it is. Bounded on one side by soaring cliffs which meld beautifully into crystal clear Mediterranean waters and on the other by a wide expanse of Barbados-like fine beige sand, the village itself is an idyllic treasure unlike any you've seen before, but may have dreamed about. The village, which has grown vertically from a tiny picturesque fishing harbor, has been discovered by German travelers to the extent that services are plentiful. However, the town has lost none of its original pre-touristed charm. When my wife and I were there last fall, we didn’t see a single other tourist. Frankly, I’m severely conflicted about recommending Sant’ Angelo to other travelers, as I want to return in 10 or 20 years to find it just as it is today

Ischia is one of the most fantastic places you could go on holiday. The people are wonderful, food, drink and scenery are superb and it is not "touristy" or over commercialised. The towns and villages are delightful and the beaches are lovely, made even more attractive by not being huge. Sailing across that blue sea with Monte Epomeo rising out of the Atlantic Ocean ahead of you is one of the most dramatic arrivals you can make in any harbour on Earth. It is just magnificent.

Ischia review

This is truly one of the most beautiful and relaxing places on earth. The scenery is simply spectacular, the food magnificent (and inexpensive), the people warm and friendly as you would expect in Italy. Hotel accommodations are good as well. I found Ischia to be an unexpected experience in the best way and I'd recommend it to anyone. One word of caution, as this is "off the beaten path" a bit, English is not widely spoken. But, if you try, you can communicate. Be sure to visit the castle in the sea. We took a day-long boat trip with lunch around the island -- unforgettable. I wish I were there now.

Thermal Gardens

The most beautiful thermal garden of the world

Thermal parks or gardens represent one of the most loved tourist attraction of the island: they consist of a series of swimming pools, containing as well sea water and thermal water, facilities for bathing and for beauty treatments, tropical plants, refreshment points. They are usually located nearby the sea and the main beaches, from where it is possible to enjoy  a spectacular view of the coast. From Villa is  easily arrive at walk to the most beautifuul Thermal Park .

Villas of Ischia

Villa La Colombaia   (Lacco Ameno - Forio)

The Villa, surrounded by a superb park, was the residence of the movie director Luchino Visconti. It is now the seat of the cultural Institution dedicated to Visconti, which is involved in cultural activities promotion such as music, cinema, theatre, art exhibitions, work-shops, cinema reviews. A museum dedicated to Luchino Visconti will be open soon. The Villa and the the Park are accessible to public visits.

Villa  La Mortella (Forio - San Francesco)

This wonderful park is located at Forio d’Ischia and was originally the property of the English composer William Walton, who lived in the Villa next door with his wife. When the composer arrived on the island in 1946, he immediately called a botanical expert from England to lay out the garden, planting wonderful tropical and Mediterranean plants, some of which have now reached amazing proportions.

Reviews From Tripadvisor.

La Mortella is the garden created largely by Susana Lady Walton, widow of the distinguished English composer. When they bought their house, a few miles outside Forio, in the North West of Ischia, It was surrounded by bare and precipitous limestone scree ('nothing but a quarry', according to their friend Larry Olivier), but it is now a paradise of ferns, trees, flowers, water features and memorials to her adored husband. It is a perfect place, peaceful, fascinating to the keen gardener, and a haven of green in what can be a bare and rocky part of the world.

The Castel

Castello Aragonese ( Ischia Ponte)

Castello Aragonese is one of the most striking monuments on the island. It stands on a small island near Ischia Ponte. The castle can be reached over a stone bridge. The small island is about 113 meters high and the climb can be made on an old mule track or by using a modern elevator that was installed in the seventies. The castle was built in 1441 by Alfonso D’Aragona on top of the ruins of an old fort that dated back to 474 B.C. This fortified castle was used to protect Ischia’s population from pirate attacks. In the 16th century, almost 1900 families lived in the castle, as well as.

Church of Soccorso

This tiny white-washed church is located in a truly spectacular position: in the square on the Punta del Soccorso in Forio, that looks out onto the crystal clear sea. A typically Mediterranean site of astounding beauty

Sport

Tennis, beach voley, Bike, sail.

Music

http://www.musicaischia.it/

Live-music is usually played in pubs as well as during special feasts in the streets. Classical music is also represented: there are concerts at Giardini la Mortella, Villa Arbusto at the Aragonese Castle, sometimes in the churches.

Wine Tasting

On the Island of Ischia, the viticulture has millenarian origins. The cultivation technique is like the Greek traditional one. In fact, it is different from that one used in the middle of Italy and in the rest of the Campania province. From the coasts to the steep mountain slopes is where the vine is cultivated on proper terraced fields.

Here is a list of the most famous and diffused kinds of grapes, all cultivated in the island from about 300 years ago: White Grapes - Biancolella, Forastera, and Arilla S. Lunardo; Red Grapes – Guarnaccia and Pedirosso o Pere e Palummo.

Events

One of the many things that makes Ischia such a fantastic place to visit is the variety of events on offer throughout the country every month of the year.
Whether you like, from musical events and festivals, to the handycrafts markets in the historical center and sports events, you will always find the ideal events for your tastes.

In spring and summer, the various villages on Ischia organize several events: most of them are linked to religious festivals, that are an important part of the island’s tradition and cultural identity. If you are planning to spend a few days on the island in the period of one of the events below, we recommend

In spring and summer, the various villages on Ischia organize several events: most of them are linked to religious festivals, that are an important part of the island’s tradition and cultural identity. If you are planning to spend a few days on the island in the period of one of the events below, we recommend

Vinischia - July An event that is entirely dedicated to food and wine and Campania regional crafts. It has been organized each summer since 1999 at Torre Guevara at Ischia Ponte. Shows, concerts and dances are organized around the exhibitions and the food and wine tasting.

Settembre sul SagaratoAugust and September  A village festival has been organized every year since 1988 in Ischia, that is held in Piazzale Battistessa, opposite the Church of San Pietro. The festival lasts for two weeks and is filled with painting exhibitions, parades of traditional costumes, wine tasting, “fagiolate” (bean stew tasting), concerts and shows.

Festa della “Ndrezzata”Easter Monday The “Festa della “Ndrezzata” is held in the village of Buonopane, near Barano every Easter Monday. The “Ndrezzata”, is a typical dance from the island. It is a kind of rhythmic, violent and picturesque fight where the dancers are dressed in traditional island costumes and fight each other with wooden swords.

Festa di Sant’Anna26 Jul The Festa di Sant’Anna in Ischia Porto is held on July 26th each year in the borough of Ischia.
On that occasion, there is a sea parade of figurative boats from the island’s various boroughs and also from Procida, under the Castello Aragonese. The parade ends with a prize-giving ceremony and fireworks.
The festival is watched by an enthusiastic public.

ForeignFilmFestivalJune  A cinema festival with premieres and retrospective themes dedicated to films located in Europe, especially Italy. Ischia, for example, was one of the favorite locations for films made in Italy from the 1950s onwards. Some of the films made here are “Vacanze a Ischia” with Vittorio De Sica, the colossal “Cleopatra” with Richard Burton and Liz Taylor and the more recent film “The Talent of Mr Ripley” with Matt Damon and Jude Law.

Shopping

In every built up area of the island there are streets where you can go exciting shopping of craftsman ship, agricultural local products. The Boutiques, that sell “the Famous brand” clothes, mark the shopping route:

In Ischia you can go to Via Roma, Corso Vittoria Colonna, or to Borgo di Ischia Ponte, a very nice place full of artisans, shops, restarantes and jewelleries.

In Casamicciola, the main streets for shopping are the Seafront and the adjoning Marina Square

In Lacco Ameno the seafront has been very famous since fifties, nowadays called Corso Rizzoli, that comes out at Piazza Santa Restituta, the place where the inhabintants meet each other.

In Forio, thanks to the exspanse of the town territori, there are a lot of possibilities for shopping. Here we only mention the very long main street that crosses the whole city territory.

In Serrara Fontana, do not miss Sant’Angelo, the sea area of the town, for hopping and social life.

In Barano the center of commercial life is the square which faces the wonderful beach of Maronti.

Typical food

From the peasant table to the gourmet cuisine, the triumph of the authentic tastes of fertile land and rich sea, real taste’s treasures!

PIZZA
It is not possible to talk about Campania’s gastronomy without mentioning the pizza.
This palate’s delight was born in Naples, in honour of Queen Margaret. From simple baked product it became a fanciful, rich, surprising and always appreciated food.

ISCHITANIAN RABBIT
It is not possible to know if it is because of that mountain that climbs towards the sky giving the idea of an island-not-island, or because of the misture of land and sea that Ischia has kept that primitive and wild feeling that now meets modernity . For all this reasons this island is a priceless place, especially for the taste. It is an land island.
Staring from the rabbit, always cooked in terracotta baking-pan with a clove of garlic, wine, little tomatoes, lard and local spices: poor ingredients for an old and very savoury dish.

BUCATINI WITH RABBIT SAUCE
Indivisible from the ischitanian rabbit is this very savoury main course that is served with the very simple but very rich rabbit sauce

PIT RABBIT
In latest years the pit rabbit became like a totem for the island. The rabbit is bred after the old manner. It lives its natural state: wild, in woods and mountains, and grows up (as for many centuries) in pits and only feeds with wild grass.

SNAILS (‘E MARUZZE)
They are picked along the dry walls (parracine) and in woods. They are cooked in the traditional way with wild grass, especially in the internal par of the island.

ISCHITANIAN CAPONATA
Appetizer or main course(if served with mozzarella cheese), the caponata directly originates from the typical “insalata cafona” (peasant salad). The peasant used to eat it for lunch, in the countryside, during the working time. Nowadays there are many recipes, the oldest one combines little tomatoes, onion, stale bread or “freselle”, salad and wild grass.

FISH
Fish in Ischia does not betray.
There are many ways to buy it fresh, directly in fish-shops or at the “paranza”(trawler) when fishermen come back from the sea after the beating.
Typical of the island are macaroni with sea food, linguine with sea-urchins and different species of local fish served in many ways: marinated, cooked in the oven, with spaghetti. The paranza fry is very famous: a lot of fried little fish of different species depending on what fishermen found. Usually they bring basses white breams, giltheads, little tuna, crayfish, calamari, squids and langoustes that enrich the menu of restaurants and agritourisms.
HONEY
Some passionately fond , produce honey made from bees, citrus fruits or flowers.
The local honey has a consistence and a taste very different from the others.

BREAD
There is a town between Barano and Serrara Fontana called BUONOPANE (good bread). Here they have been making bread for centuries. Cooked only in wood ovens it is kneaded with the “crisc’to” a natural yeast of acid mother paste. The bread is still kneaded by hand, and its smell in the morning is stirring. All over the island.
All over the island there are ovens making bread.
Milk and selected cheeses are provided by the breeding of sheeps and goats and savoury sausages are obtained from pigs.

The rural culture is confirmed by the cultivation of many kind of vegetables, potatoes, eggplants, peppers, courgettes, artichokes and garden rockets.

The legume are very good: lentils, chicklings, beens (they have curious and unusual varieties called “pipers” –purple red colored- and “fascists”-with black nuances-) .

The vulcanic soil favours the growh of tomatoes. They are picked up in clusters and twisted to create the typical “pendoli”kept in dry and fresh place.
